National Conference on Freedom of Association and Civil Society Development

Al Kawakibi Democracy Transition Center organized a national conference on “Freedom of Association and Civil Society Development: Reality, role and needs; Suggestions to develop legislations” in partnership with The Lebanese Foundation for Permanent Civil Peace.
The Conference was held in the frame of the “Partnership Document”, KADEM’s program addressed to civil society. The National Conference was held on September 28th, 2009 in Lebanon, and was attended by more than 60 participants including the distinguished participation of Mr. Zied Baroud the Lebanese Minister of Interior and the participation of Mr. Ghassen Mkhibar Member of Parliament.
The Conference was also attended by lawyers, journalists, academics, civil society representatives, and the international expert on civil society. The conference came to monitor the legislative reality of civil society in Lebanon and to present the results of the national study conducted by the Lebanese expert on "Freedom of Association and freedom of assembling organizations and unions ", and to present the recommendations reached in this national study.
Throughout the conference, the participants contributed to the creation of a public opinion supporting cultural diversity and confirming the essential role of civil society in promoting full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Conference has drawn important media coverage, including several local Lebanese newspapers, and the Lebanese TV channels.
